While shouldering the stress and strain of renovations, moving classrooms and equipment, and the impending start of the school year, a positive attitude prevails in Seven Hills Preparatory Academy's community regarding the move of the school site from Bloomington to Burnsville. “We’re super excited about having a space that is solely school use instead of being a tenant in somebody else’s building,” said Brent Peterson, principal of the Burnsville campus, which will serve 500 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. “We’re just really excited about using our rooms for educational purposes in their totality, having playgrounds that are just dedicated for us.”
The families who chartered Seven Hills in 2006 looked to Nova Classical Academy in St. Paul as a model, Peterson said. The classical education model is anchored by the trivium--the developmental stages of grammar, logic and rhetoric--encompassing a broad liberal arts education. In addition, Seven Hills focuses on character development and citizenship.
The school stresses integrated learning, threading topics across subjects, Peterson said. "Because one of the ideas of classical education is that all knowledge is interrelated," he said. "Students can have a strength of knowledge if they're connecting the math topic to the science lesson to what they're writing about in their language arts class."
